چکیده

In the Eastern Mediterranean, where some of earliest known urban cities are located, relatively little is about soils in archaeological contexts. Red Mediterranean Soil (RMS) a hallmark region while impact long-term urbanization on RMS material understudied. this article we present evidence from longue durée cityscape Jerash, Jordan, to determine how humans have used, modified and impacted an context. Thin-sections were made twelve samples, micromorphological studies several in-situ but disturbed adjacent bedrock conducted, spanning initial surface soil disturbances Hellenistic Roman period occupation, as well transported through Umayyad periods (until earthquake 749 CE). We compared on-site inner-urban red natural area found that characteristics reflect their origin Pleistocene soils, other traits human related activities. The majority samples contained comparable modern centers, including changes structure, texture, inclusions, high levels contamination heavy metals phosphorus (P), which combined strong signs activity. Evidence textural pedofeatures, fragmented peds, mixed fabrics, sorting silt-sized likely use gardens cultivation. Black carbon inclusions within fabric contain for burning organic matter connection with various anthropogenic activities, re-dispersed via aeolian water erosion processes. Heavy metal enrichments, associated production artisanal may also been disseminated by both processes, possibly conjunction irrigation undertaken polluted water. Contrasting fabrics inclusion features observed thin section together elemental analayses characterizes nature cultivation its environmental context at city life was maintained over 800 years. With cultivated areas increasingly evidenced stratigraphies different regions world, our approach offers new insight into vital contributions these management has food security, resilience longevity early life.

The role of community gardens in urban agriculture

Urban agriculture involves the production of food in space that is within and immediately surrounding cities. There are many motivations for this kind of production. These encompass environmental advantages (reducing ̳food miles‘ and the impact of ̳urban heat islands‘), social benefits (increasing food security and agricultural education of city-dwellers), and human health perks (eating fresher...

Estimating Dietary Risk from Soils in Urban Gardens

Soil contamination is a public health concern in many countries but methods to assess dietary risk from soil metal toxicity have not been standardized worldwide. Laboratory data on urban soils are limited and do not adequately link metal content to associated food plant uptake. Cadmium is a health risk because it accumulates in lettuce and may be consumed at high levels by childbearing women. T...

Urban Sound Gardens: Supporting Overlapping Audio Landmarks in Exploratory Environments

Sound gardens rely on location tracking technology to situate audio landmarks in public spaces, typically urban parks. These landmarks are surrounded by a proximity zone, and content relating to them is displayed to users within this region. In densely populated sound gardens, overlap between zones is inevitable and will result in simultaneous playback of multiple audio sources – a potentially ...

Going native? Flower use by bumblebees in English urban gardens.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS Although urban gardens provide opportunities for pollinators in an otherwise inhospitable environment, most garden plants are not native to the recipient biogeographical region and their value to local pollinators is disputed. This study tested the hypothesis that bumblebees foraging in English urban gardens preferentially visited sympatric Palaearctic-range plants over spec...

Local and landscape drivers of predation services in urban gardens.

In agroecosystems, local and landscape features, as well as natural enemy abundance and richness, are significant predictors of predation services that may result in biological control of pests. Despite the increasing importance of urban gardening for provisioning of food to urban populations, most urban gardeners suffer from high pest problems, and have little knowledge about how to manage the...
